Email Client Configuration - Mozilla Thunderbird
Start Thunderbird, and select Tools - Account Settings... from the menu.
First time in Thunderbird? Then set up an IMAP account, using mail.cmrr.umn.edu
and your CMRR user id. Don't worry, you will adjust the settings in a moment.
Select your account's Server Settings. If you are using IMAP,
check Use Secure Connection (SSL). Verify the port number changes to 993.
If you are using POP instead, you still check the Use Secure Connection (SSL).
But with POP, the port number should change to 995.
Now click on Outgoing Server (SMTP). Check Use name and password, and specify
your CMRR user id. Click Use Secure Connection: TLS. IMPORTANT: You may also need to set
the port number to 587 manually.
When you first read mail securely, you will see a warning for the
mail.cmrr.umn.edu certificate. Follow the instructions about
importing the certificate, clicking Accept
this certificate permanently and then OK.
And that's it! You now can read your email, even over wireless, with an encrypted
communication between your browser and the email server. No one will be able to
read your passwords or your email in transit.
