From cheryl at cmrr.umn.edu Mon Apr 7 10:49:14 2008 From: cheryl at cmrr.umn.edu (Cheryl Olman) Date: Mon, 07 Apr 2008 10:49:14 -0500 Subject: [3tf-list] CPR certification Message-ID: <47FA427A.2000803@cmrr.umn.edu> As most of you know, current CPR certification is now a requirement for having off-hours (card-swipe) access at the CMRR. I'm looking into the feasibility of coordinating a site-specific CPR certification course for 3T users later this month. Please respond to me (cheryl at cmrr.umn.edu) in the next 2 days if you are interested in participating. Please also indicate (with an X) your availability for a 2 1/2 hour session on any of the following dates/times Tuesday, April 22nd, 9:30am ___ 1pm ___ 3pm ___ Wednesday, April 23rd, 1pm ___ 3pm ___ Wednesday, April 30th, 9:30am ___ 1pm ___ 3pm ___ Thursday, May 1st, 9:30am ___ 1pm ___ 3pm ___ Friday, May 2nd, 9:30am ___ 1pm ___ 3pm ___ Here are some more details: - Training would be provided by Cathy Miller, Chance for Life CPR, and is tailored to the specifics of the CMRR (what # to dial in emergency, where the AED is stored and training on the specific model) - The session is appropriate for either new or renewal certification - Certification is good for 2 years - Individuals would pay for their training at the start of the session. The cost will be $50, paid to Cathy on the day of the training. Please reply to me (cheryl at cmrr.umn.edu) by April 17 if you will participate. If you've already contacted me once, please email me again to let me know which session you will attend. This is organized primarily to help researchers from across campus get site-specific training so they can work effectively on the 3T, but there's also room for CMRR denizens to participate if it's time to update your CPR training and you missed the last ones that Jeramy organized. Just let me know. We need to be on the alert for local interest increasing in the coming days. This precedes WWAIL (World Week for Animals in Labs which begins April 20. ) Please be on the alert for any unusual activity in your area. Urge your staff to report any suspicious or unusual happenings to the UMPD immediately. We want to avoid any disruption in our work. UMPD wants to hear from you--don't hesitate to call them. Of course call me if you have any questions or issues. Moira 6-4851 /Some of you will receive this notice more than once as it is going to a couple lists-apologies./ Peter Young is a dangerous ideologue who has claimed multiple actions on behalf of the domestic terrorist group Animal Liberation Front (ALF), releasing over 8,000 animals in 1997. In September 2005, Young pleaded guilty to conspiracy to release mink from 6 fur farms in South Dakota, Wisconsin, and Iowa; and the actual release of 2,400 mink from a farm in Medford, Wisconsin.^ He was sentenced to two years in federal prison; 360 hours of community service at a charity "to benefit humans and no other species"; $254,000 restitution; and one year probation. He was released from Victorville, California?s federal prison on February 1, 2007. U.S. District Judge Stephen Crocker called Young, who spent seven years on the run, an arrogant vigilante and warned him against ever repeating his crimes. After being sentenced, he told the fur farmers in the courtroom that he would "forever mark those nights on your property as the most rewarding experience of my life." Young smiled at a cheering crowd jamming the courtroom and, in a moment that exhibited his self-absorbed conceit, told his victims in the audience ''it was an absolute pleasure to raid your farms.'' In his statement to the court, Young urged everyone in the courtroom to attack more farms. -- Jeramy Kulesa Lab Manager & Safety Officer Department of Radiology/Center for Magnetic Resonance Research University of Minnesota 2021 6th St. SE Minneapolis, MN 55455 Phone: 612-625-8847 Fax: 612-626-2004 Email: Kulesa at cmrr.umn.edu -- =================================================== Kelvin O. The shelf is not the garbage, the laundry bins, the newspaper receptacle - or even where paperwork is filed. Please throw garbage in the garbage - put scrubs in the laundry hampers (animal hampers are in the back garage) human hampers are in all of the magnet control rooms - No one should have to pick up after anyone else - No one's Mom works here Thanks for your attention to this annoying problem. Deb From cheryl at cmrr.umn.edu Mon Apr 28 11:33:30 2008 From: cheryl at cmrr.umn.edu (Cheryl Olman) Date: Mon, 28 Apr 2008 11:33:30 -0500 Subject: [3tf-list] New mirror for 12-channel head coil Message-ID: <4815FC5A.2030303@cmrr.umn.edu> Thanks to the great patience of the physics machine shop, we have a new mirror for viewing stimuli projected into the bore of the scanner behind the subject. Taking a gamble that people will want to take advantage of the increased field of view, I left it attached to the coil. It has 3 degrees of freedom -- one pair of screws, when loosened a bit, will let it slide along the length of the coil. A second pair of screws will let the mirror travel up and down and rotate. Please be careful with this second pair -- it is possible to put the mirror high enough to hit the top of the bore on the way in. We'll work on making this fail-safe, but for now, there's tape limiting the vertical range of motion. The subject can adjust the mirror from inside the bore by loosening and tightening the screws. It requires a bit of fiddling to get the mirror on and off the coil. If you want to remove it or install it, and it's not immediately obvious how to go about that, please check with me or Casey.
