About the Job

Required Qualifications:

  • BA/BS in a computer science, engineering, or related technical field plus 10 years of experience or a master’s degree in a computer science, engineering, or related technical field plus eight years of experience.
  • Previous management experience including supervision
  • Expertise in UNIX based data center management
  • Proficient at computer programming and debugging in both compiled and scripting languages
  • Demonstrated ability to move multiple projects forward at the same time and meet deadlines
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze, design, and optimize complex processes
  • Proven ability to develop timelines, implement innovative business strategies, identify problems and solutions and conduct systemic process review and improvements
  • Experience researching, interpreting, and applying policies
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal

Preferred Qualifications:

  • PhD in computer science, engineering or related technical field
  • Familiarity with HIPAA regulations
  • Image and signal processing (FSL, SPM, BV, MATLAB)
  • Imaging data management (DICOM PACS, LORIS, XNAT)
  • Experience in FPGA programming and Real Time operating systems (e.g. VxWorks)
  • Parallel programing in CUDA and deep learning with Tensor-Flow
  • Knowledge of Electro-Magnetic field theory, magnetic resonance and/or optical imaging
  • Rapid 7 InsightVM, Splunk log monitoring and Fortigate firewalls

Job description:

Provides strategic leadership with the Center for Magnetic Resonance Research (CMRR) for the alignment of all IT operations to support a computational intensive research infrastructure through integration of center and enterprise services. Partners with the University OIT department and the Health Services Technology team on strategic initiatives between CMRR and the greater University. Manages the team to ensure all computer technical support needs are met from desktop workstations to data center compute and storage servers.  Provide design and maintenance of novel computer systems that often interface to existing electronic systems for innovative research experimentation for technology development.

Responsibilities:

40% Information Technology Director
  • Manage IT support personnel team
  • Oversee the daily operations of the data center
  • Propose and implement strategic plan for next generation center computing
  • Manage VLAN networking topology and associated firewall rules
  • Perform system hardening to minimize security vulnerabilities
  • Coordinate maintenance of building infrastructure of power, cooling and access
  • Perform trade studies of optimal compute solutions given budgetary constraints
  • Maintain documentation for compliance audit of university computing standards
20% Scientific Computing Software Engineer
  • Development and maintenance of data analysis software pipelines
  • Manage the debugging and feature augmentation of existing software systems
  • Automation of data processing, storage and retrieval
  • Responsible for deployment of High Performance Computing systems (e.g. multi-GPU servers)
20% Data Analysis Research
  • Implement theoretical abstractions into algorithms
  • Optimize algorithms through statistical evaluations
  • Employ signal and image processing techniques to facilitate inductive inferences from the data
  • Deploy analytical techniques with visualizations to explore complex phenomena to enable scientific discovery
20% Project Manager
  • Generation of rapid prototypes for scientific instrumentation
  • Integration of hardware subsystems and/or external systems via middleware
  • Development of real time feedback and monitoring systems
  • Create Graphical User Interfaces to effectively present results and facilitate productivity


The Center for Magnetic Resonance Research (CMRR), funded as a Biotechnology Research Center (BTRC) by the National Center for Research Resources (NCRR) until 2012 and by the National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering (NIBIB) since then, focuses on development of unique magnetic resonance (MR) imaging and spectroscopy methodologies and instrumentation for the acquisition of structural, functional, and biochemical information non-invasively in humans, and utilizing this capability to investigate organ function in health and disease.

The distinctive feature of this center is the emphasis on ultrahigh magnetic fields (7 Tesla and above), which was pioneered by this BTRC. This emphasis is based on the premise that there exists significant advantages to extracting biomedical information using ultrahigh magnetic fields, provided difficulties encountered by working at high frequencies corresponding to such high field strengths can be overcome by methodological and engineering solutions.

CMRR is home to some of the most advanced MR instrumentation in the world, complemented by human resources that provide unique expertise in imaging physics, engineering, and signal processing. No single group of scientists can successfully carry out all aspects of this type of interdisciplinary biomedical research; by bringing together these multi-disciplinary capabilities in a synergistic fashion, facilitating these interdisciplinary interactions, and providing adequate and centralized support for them under a central umbrella, CMRR amplifies the contributions of each of these groups of scientists to basic and clinical biomedical research.
